In the summer of 2008, I went to Sedona, Arizona to participate in a Shamanic drum making workshop with Jade Wah'oo Grigori, caretaker of the Shamanic Ways. Over a weekend, a small group of us created and consecrated our own Shamanic drum under the guidance of Jade. We learned about traditional Shamanic Drum making techniques to fashion the hides into a double sided Shamanic drum and handle. We were told stories of the Ancestors and also of Jade's personal journey, wisdom and insight he's found.During that week I camped in the Mojave Desert and under the Red Rocks in Sedona National Park. I saw the Milky-Way as I've never seen it before and heard and saw animals in their natural surroundings as I lived among them. I learned about 'the Ways' of which I was unfamiliar. Jade explained about the Eagle beat, which acts as a conduit or connection to Eagle, an important Spirit in Shamanic understanding. The Eagle beat is a monotonous drone. Within the tone there is a subtlety of tones and sounds, and even silence as Jade explains in his Youtube video: Shamanic Drumming with Jade.
Jade also explained to us the importance of honoring the spirit of the stag (elk) that gave its life for our drum. He told us of another spirit, The Great White Stag, who is the keeper of spirit for the stag, and we performed a ceremony to collect the spirits of the elk that were killed for our hides. We journeyed into the lower world by playing the low side of the drum, and located and gathered up the spirits, then we played the drum in the celestial plane by playing the high tone side of the drum. While in the celestial plane, we returned the spirits to the White Stag, but we were given the opportunity to bring the spirit back into the drum, to give it power. Accepting this responsibility, I brought the spirit of the stag into my drum.
I recorded a simple journey into the subconscious which I have uploaded for your journeying use. Please listen with an open heart and pay attention to the subtleties of the tone and beat as if you were playing. There is no right or wrong way to listen. There is no right or wrong way to meditate. Breathe, relax your muscles, close your eyes, and let go.
