What do we do when we feel like we are not making spiritual progress, or even like we may be slipping backward into old habits or unconscious behaviors?
Simply being aware of this as a problem means that you are on the right track. Think about it this way. If someone is aware that they might have a problem or obstacle, they are on their way to solving the problem. In addition, there is concern, and that is a signal that something you care about needs attention. As G.I. Joe would say knowing is half the battle. The concern can help you focus on what is actually wrong.
Maybe a new approach is needed. Maybe a break is what is needed. Sometimes space and perspective are more productive then continuing to bang your head against the wall. (go figure!)
When it comes to Spiritual practice in particular, a major obstacle comes in the form of expectation. I expect to achieve this or that, or experience this or that in a certain way. When one considers the supernatural dimension consists of things beyond form and measure, creating expectations leave no room for actual experience. By opening yourself up to whatever may be, you can experience subtleties you never expected. Also beyond subtleties, when you remove your own expectations and constant stream of thought, you open yourself up to quantum leaps of experience where no openings ever were before.
Pay attention to your breathing when ever you can think about it. Then breath deeply, and fully. Can you remember to do this 5 times a day? What about 10 times. What is your breathing like right before you remember to breath deeply? The Supernatural State can happen when our eyes are open too. In fact it's all SUPERNATURAL.
